The Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Scheme - Gold Award

For more information and course availability please

The Gold Award is run during our Monday and Wednesday classes.  The aim of this Award is to build upon the skills learnt in the Silver Award, whilst increasing the level of difficulty.  It also introduces new concepts importat to everyday life situations i.e. relaxed isolation, stop the dog and send the dog to bed.  The Gold Award provies handlers with a greater knowledge of understaning and training of their canine companion.

Assessments for the Good Citizen Dog Scheme take place twice a year.  Below is a list of exercises you and your dog will undertake to gain the Gold Award.

Exercise 1 -   Road Walk

Exercise 2 -   Return to Handler's Side

Exercise 3 -   Walk Free Beside Handler

Exercise 4 -   Stay down in one Place

Exercise 5 -   Send the Dog to Bed

Exercise 6 -   Stop the Dog

Exercise 7 -   Relaxed Isolation

Exercise 8 -   Food Manners

Exercise 9 -   Examination of the Dog

Exercise 10 - Responsibility and Care

HANDOUTS

Handlers are given the following handouts:

  • Gold Award Description including Responsibility & Care

  • Canine Code

For those passing all parts of the test will receive a Good Citizen Dog Scheme Gold Certificate, and a Gold Award Rosette.  The handler also receives a Gold Award pin badge and the dog a Gold Award collar tag.

To bridge the gap between the KC Silver and the Gold Award, BMC Academy run their own scheme - The Pre-Gold Award.  This prepares the handler and dog from Silver to the Gold Award standard.  It will be accessed internally and those passing all the test will receive a BMC Academy Certificate and Rosette.

As the Gold Award is the highest level of achievement of the Good Citizen Scheme the BMC Academy will run their Post-Gold Awards.  To advance handlers knowledge and skills with their canine companion, the possibilities are endless, and so are the Awards we invent for our students.
